Making the Home Conductive to Work

Parents can set the stage for homework success by organizing a household environment where studying does not conflict with other activities. Some strategies recommended by National Education Association, the U.S. Department of Education, and National Parent Organizations include:

* Planning "quiet time" for the family every day. This study time will allow the child to work uninterrupted, but also will give the child an opportunity to see other family members engaged in quiet activities.

* Scheduling homework at a time that works for the child and for the family. Some kids are able to start homework right after school, while others may prefer to come home and take a break.

* Helping the child set up a study area. The area can be in any room; the location may depend on whether the child prefers to study alone or around others.
