Welcome to First Grade
In first grade, your child should be able to:
- Write stories, journals, and lists.
- Use capitalization, punctuation, and spacing between words.
- Read and discuss different types of literature.
- Know main characters, setting, and simple plot in a story.
- Select material to read for pleasure (for example, favorite books and stories).
- Use simple maps and globes.
- Identify the difference between living and not-living things.
- Demonstrate calendar skills.
- Understand the causes of motion.
- Count and write numbers from 0-100.
- Tell time to the hour and half hour.
- Count money to $.25
- Know place value of digits in whole numbers to 100.
- Understand temperature and the use of a thermometer.
- Compare larger and smaller quantities.
